Take the Test: Grab Your Phone – Do You Stop Breathing?

Catch Your Breath!
Catch Your Breath!

GET YOUR SCORE

  1. Grab your phone like you normally do.

  2. Does your head drop downward or forward? (Yes = 1 point, No = 0)

  3. Do your shoulders roll forward or inward? (Yes = 1, No = 0)

  4. How deep is your breath? (Hardly breathing = 2, Shallow = 1, Full body = 0)

  5. Are your belly or digestive organs compressed? (Yes = 1, No = 0)

Score 2 or higher? You may be limiting oxygen and circulation to your brain and organs—affecting both health and cognitive function. Forward head posture works like a kink in a hose, reducing your respiratory capacity and circulation to your brain.

Think about it: How many times do you grab your phone each day? Each time, your body reinforces the same "grooves" through muscle memory. Over time, your habits literally shape your default seated and standing posture —your body keeps the score.

I notice it myself. Sometimes I grab my phone out of pure habit. The dopamine hits are waiting, the device’s design is working, and in the attention economy—they’ve got me. But here’s the good news: you can reprogram how you use your devices to reduce the impact on your health and improve your attention and brain functions.

Try This: Horizon Gazing

  1. Open your arms out to the sides, hands at ear height so you can see your fingers wiggling.

  2. Let your head and eyes lift—like a balloon floating upward.

  3. Look left toward an imagined horizon or sunset… and yawn.

  4. Look right as far as comfortable… and yawn.

  5. Gaze forward, slightly above the horizon line.

  6. Inhale through your nose (if possible), then exhale with an audible sigh: “Ahhh.”

Now check: how deep is your breath—Hardly breathing, Shallow, or Full body?

Your body breathes 20,000 times a day. Taking even a minute to notice and reset your posture and breathing can refresh your mind and body. Horizon Gazing can be done anywhere—and with practice, it can become part of your muscle memory and default postural habits.
